How to Replace the Ignition Key on a Saab 9-3
If the car key won't turn in the ignition it is time to replace it. This guide will guide you through how to do it on a Saab 9-3. You'll need a replacement key, a new reprogrammable battery, and a new key-fob cover.
Unlike older models, most modern Saab automobiles use transponders in the key-fob rather than a physical metal key to unlock and start the car. The rechargeable batteries contained in the key-fob eventually wear out, and they cannot hold any charge. This is especially relevant if you use the same key for the lock you have.

The good news is that it is easily replaced by a professional locksmith. If you have the right tools and patience you can do it yourself. The first step is separating the key-fob. Insert a flathead into the slot that is in the middle of your case. The plastic is brittle, and easily damaged.
After the case has been opened, you can make the new key by combining lower part of the old key with transponder and banana. This will ensure that the new key is linked to the CIM correctly, which could be the difference in replacing the sole key for your Saab 9-3.

If you don't have two keys, you'll need to remove the dashboard and steering wheel to gain access to the ignition. Start by disconnecting your negative battery cable. After saab keys has been disconnected, you can take off the dashboard and trim pieces around the steering wheel. Once the dash is removed, you can push an screwdriver through the hole on the back of the ignition switch and pull it out.
The ignition barrel has an ignition lock that can prevent the vehicle from starting if key isn't in it. If the ignition switch on your 900 doesn't work correctly, make sure to check whether the key is in the lock or within the ignition barrel. It's also recommended to rotate your keys often and clean them regularly so that one doesn't get bent.
Saab cars differ from other cars in that they don't use traditional keys made of metal. Instead, the car detects electronic signals coming from the key fob using the use of a special microchip.
If you lose your only working key fob, the dealer will charge you the highest dollar for the replacement of your computer module (known as the CIM). However, we can reprogram your computer's EEPROM, and then prepare it to accept new keys without replacing it. You'll save up to 50% on the price charged by the dealer! This is the SAAB KEY PROGRAM. How to replace the ignition Key in the Saab9-5
The metal component of classic Saab keys is simple to copy and does not represent a significant risk to theft of vehicles. The real protection is the electronic component that's in the key fob, which is equipped with a chip that can recognize your vehicle when it's inserted into your ignition switch.
Saab has relied on the technology of this anti-theft device for more than a decade. It's not as effective as a physical lock on the door however it makes the process of stealing your vehicle harder. This is why every Saab owner should always have a spare key on hand.
The majority of new Saabs come with two keys right from the factory, however you can buy more keys from the dealer with a handheld computer known as a Tech-2. The cost can be under $400 for the transmitter+transponder (different than the metal key blade/shell that opens the doors and turns the ignition cylinder). The only exception to this is NG 9-3 cars, which have more modern and advanced features that require a different key-fob and operate using a different procedure.
The dealer will replace the CIM or TWICE module in these cars if the keys are lost, and they'll charge you a premium to do it. We can reprogram your computer's EEPROM to accept new keys without replacing expensive modules.
How do I replace the ignition Key on a Saab XC90
If your SAAB 9-3 key fob begins having trouble turning the barrel of the lock it's possible that it's time to replace it. The procedure is quite simple and doesn't require you to visit a dealer. You can complete the process at home using just a few basic tools.
The first step is to prepare the new key. Before you start, be sure that the anti-theft feature is disabled by placing blocks on the rear wheels and releasing the handbrake. Insert the key in the ignition and turn the key to the "on" position. This will activate the accessories but will not start the engine. Repeat this 5 times, and then leave the key in the "on" position.
The next step is to find a new case for your key fob. You can find them at any auto parts store and they're typically very affordable. You can purchase them with or without electronics, depending on the model.
To open the case, insert a flathead screwdriver in the slot in the middle, and gently work it. The case will break easily, and when you do, you'll have access to the internal electronics. Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry out the electronic components.
